A Math Free Explanation of Gradient Descent

Here's is a math free explanation of gradient descent. Imagine yourself standing on top of a mountain. You need to descend that mountain in the quickest and most efficient way possible. Maybe it’s on fire or it’s just too cold and you don’t want to freeze to death. Before you start your trek down, you look in every possible direction to determine which way you should start your descent. You take the direction that gives you the steepest, safe first step down the mountain. You stop, look around again and take the steepest step down from you current position. You continue down this way until you reach the bottom. This is gradient descent in a nutshell. The red path in the photo above is a possible path you might have taken. It’s possible that your path could have taken you around and down the other side of the mountain.
